The song “I’ve Got a Dream”, in the hit Disney movie Tangled, portrays a deeper meaning than what is originally perceived by listeners. The overall theme of the song revolves around men who are portrayed as scary criminals and thugs but are people who are deeply misunderstood by society. This song illustrates man’s conflict with the external world and his urge to escape from his reality, and live out his dreams. The Freudian concept of artistic gift is also present in this song. Someone who “possesses an artistic gift can transform his phantasies into artistic creations instead of into symptoms. In this manner, he can escape the doom of neurosis and by this roundabout path regain his contact with reality” (Freud 2235). When the men sing “And violence wise, my hands are not the cleanest. But despite my evil look. And my temper, and my hook. I’ve always yearned to be a concert pianist”(Slater 0:25) it is clear that society has judged them and forced them to deal with a troubled life which results in their desperation to fulfill their dreams.
