Reflecting upon “ The Effect of Isolation on the Human Mind”

This Exploratory essay was written to showcase how an individual’s lifestyle, atmosphere, and childhood can negatively impact their psychological health and cause them to become an individual they may not even recognize. My paper is an analysis essay that incorporates the Freudian concepts of repression, resistance, and the wishful impulse that have been presented by Sigmund Freud in his five lectures on psychoanalysis. The piece also includes dialogue from “A Rose for Emily” written by Willam Faulkner. It’s clear throughout the story that Ms. Emily Grieson, the main character acts upon a wishful impulse that is viewed as unethical and inhumane in the eyes of readers.  Emily’s life, relationship with her father, and deprivation of any social contact support my claim of how loneliness can shape an individual and drive them to do dangerous things. And in Ms. Emily’s case, that dangerous action was murdering Homer whom she supposedly loved, and keeping his body for over thirty years refusing to let go. This is evident seeing as  Faulkner mentions that “what was left of him, rotted beneath what was left of the nightshirt, had become inextricable from the bed in which he lay”(Faulkner 6)

This piece portrays the context of uncovering the reasons why some people, such as Emily act in such a harmful and scary manner.  The tone throughout the essay remains persuasive and informative while sticking to literary-based evidence. My peers who edited this paper, and my FIQWS professors, Alyssa and Elisabeth are the audiences. After receiving much-needed feedback from both my peers and the City College Writing Center I realized where I had gone wrong when attempting to develop rhetorical sensibility. I learned a lot about the differences between academic writing, and personal writing, and now know that I have to separate my emotions from my academic writing pieces. I particularly chose to write my paper on “A Rose For Emily” because Emily Grierson is the perfect example of how an individual’s childhood can cause them to become psychologically unwell and result in them becoming a threat to the people in their life.
